Located
in the middle of the Baux de Provence
valley, South of the Alpilles region,
Mouries is the first oil-producing town
in France, with the largest number of
olive trees (71 449).
This
small village of Provence has managed
to preserve its authenticity, reviving
its traditional local festivals whose
fame has spread to the whole region
and even beyond.
The
most famous festival is, no doubt, the
green olive festival (3rd week-end of
September) during which Provençal
costumes and dances can be admired while
savouring softened-flesh olives, olive
oil and tapenade (olive dip).
The
most solemn one is the new oil festival
as the best oil of the year Ovins an
award (1st week-end of December).
Mouries
is, by definition, the place where gastronomes,
softened-flesh and black olives as well
as olive oil-based cookery loyers gather,
ahl these products being labelled `AOC
Vallée des Baux de Provence'.
